Adding Pictures to Your Website

This page contains guidelines for obtaining and preparing pictures for your website. Here are the topics:

  1. Obtaining pictures for your website (four options):

    1. You find the picture using an Internet search
    2. You find the picture on a picture website
    3. IHR finds the picture for you on a picture website
    4. You take photos with your camera

  2. Preparing pictures for your website:

    1. Background information
    2. Optimize your source photos for the web

A. Obtaining Pictures for Your Website (Four Options)

This section discusses four options for obtaining pictures for your site:

1. You Find the Picture Using an Internet Search

You could do an image search in a search engine. For example you can use Google Image Search.  Some comments about this option:

  • You can search for the photos using keywords such as "baby," "family," "doctor," or "embryo."
  • You would not own the copyright to any of these photos. If you find one you really like, you can ask the copyright owner for permission.
  • Some types of photos are ubiquitous on the Internet, and are not particularly unique to any one copyright owner. Examples of these are embryo and baby images.
  • The IVF.net website contains some interesting lab images. You could ask the copyright owner for permission to use their photo(s).

2. You Find the Picture on a Picture Website

IHR recommends one of the following sites where you can download "royalty-free" photos for your site:

One major advantage of photos from a picture website, is that they are typically attractive, high quality photos (e.g. excellent colors and resolution, and sometimes fading effects). Typically, you would do the following steps to find and download a picture:

  1. Access the picture website.
  2. Search for a "royalty free" photo using the sites search facility. You can search for the photos using keywords such as "baby," "family," "doctor," or "embryo."
  3. You may need to register on the website.
  4. When you find the picture you want to purchase, you will typically have to decide the resolution of the picture. Use these guidelines:
    • If you only want to use the photo for your website, then purchase  the lowest resolution photo (typically 72 dpi).
    • If you plan to use the photo for print media, then you'll need to select a higher resolution photo (perhaps 300 dpi)
  5. Purchase the photo and download it. The pictures generally cost $25 to $60 each.
  6. Email the photo to IHR.

3. IHR Finds the Picture for You on a Picture Website

If you wish, IHR can also find pictures for you a picture website. Of course, IHR charges for this time, however there a couple of potential advantages:

  • You don't have to spend the time learning how to find and purchase the pictures on the different picture websites.
  • IHR's graphic artists knows how to find the pictures and they know what pictures will look best on your website. This may end up saving you time in the long run.

If IHR does this for you, we will bill you for the labor and cost of the photo.

4. You Take Photos with Your Camera

You can create your own pictures for your website in one of two ways:

  • Use a digital camera. Instructions are included below.
  • Use a 35 mm camera, and request digital photos when you have them processed.

Here are some suggestions for types of photos that will add interest and a human touch to your site:

  • Outside of office building
  • Front entry door - might show your organization name if next to the door
  • Waiting room - might show people sitting in waiting room
  • Administrative office - might show people working with administrative records or on the phone
  • Doctor talking with patient or couple
  • Doctor holding baby
  • Happy couple holding baby
  • Lab area - might show people at work
  • Lab photos - you can show, for example: embryos, sperm, micromanipulation,
  • Team photos - can show individual pictures as well as a team picture
  • Prospective egg donor photos - can display the photos in a public section of your website or a password protected section

B. Preparing Pictures for Your Website

1. Background Information

When you use a digital camera to take a picture, it will contain more pixels of information than is needed on the Internet; it will be too large:

  • it will contain too many bytes (e.g. it might be a one megabyte file)
  • the actual width and height dimensions will be too big

So, you cannot simply use your original photo on your website. You will need to optimize your source photo. Here are two options:

  • You can send the original photo to IHR and we'll optimize it for you. There will be a labor charge for this service. It may take about a half hour for this.

  • If you have a digital photo application (e.g. Photoshop or an application that came with your digital camera), you can open the photo in your photo editing program and save the photo as per the directions in the next section.

2. Optimize Your Source Photos for the Web

Do the following to convert your source photo for the web:

  1. Open the source photo in your computer's photo editing application (e.g., Photoshop).
  2. If need be, edit the photo. For example, you might crop the photo or change the contrast.
  3. Save the source photo in a web format. Your application might have the following ways to do this:
    • There may be an option to "save file for website" or "email file". In this case, your application would automatically save the file in an appropriate web format.
    • If you don't have the above options available, you may be able to click on "File / Save As" to do this.
  4. Use the following guidelines for saving your photo in a web format:
Photo Format
  • .JPG - typically used for photos
  • .GIF - typically used for drawings
Photo Resolution 72 pixels per inch is the standard display resolution for pictures on the Internet. This photo resolution is low quality, so if you try to use a high resolution photo on the Internet, you're making your photo unnecessarily large.
Photo Sizes and  Dimensions Here are some photo sizes and dimensions that you can use as a rough gauge for your website:

Smaller photos:

  • used in e.g. individual physician photos
  • about 2K - 10K size
  • Examples of dimensions (approximate pixels):

Medium Photos:

  • used in e.g., individual physician photos, photos of two people interacting, or office photos
  • about 10K - 20K size
  • Examples of dimensions:

Larger photos:

  • used in e.g. team photos, home page, or office photos
  • about 10K - 20K size
  • Examples of sizes:
