Moving Your Web Site from Your Current Hosting Provider to IHR's Hosting
Numerous infertility organizations have moved their Web sites from their current
Web hosting provider to IHR's Web hosting in order to gain the many
IHR hosting advantages. IHR would be happy to hlep you move your Web site to
IHR's hosting service if you are interested. Please note that IHR's
hourly service rates apply when moving the site and setting up IHR's Web
server for the new site.
Here are the steps to move move your site:
- You initially discuss the move with IHR. One
question will be: "are you currently using your domain name for your
email?" It is important to discuss this issue before we start
moving the Web site.
- You, or your Web hosting provider, will need to provide IHR with your
current server information, so that IHR can download those Web pages. IHR
can assist you with this. IHR needs the following information:
- the server name or IP address (e.g., 161.57.99.24).
- the user name
- the user password
- IHR then does the following:
- creates a new section on IHR's Web server, downloads your current Web
pages, uploads your Web
pages to this new section, and tests the pages. These will be duplicate web pages of your
current site.
- sets up your Web statistics report for you on IHR's server.
- if you are using your Domain Name for
your email, then contacts your current provider to ensure there will be no disruption of your email
services. If you switch to a new email provider, then the new provider
must update their server configuration to handle the domain name email
(e.g. update sendmail config file).
- performs the following technical DNS changes (see Notes
about DNS changes, below, for additional information):
- adds an entry into IHR's Name Servers ( NS1.SECURE.NET and NS1.SECURE.NET) to point to
IHR's IP address where your Web pages will reside.
- if you are using Domain Name email, then typically points the Domain
MX record to your new new email provider.
- adds an entry into a server configuration file.
- IHR then sends an email to you with the following types of questions and
action items:
- questions that may have arose while IHR reviewed your Web site
- action items concerning how we will need to change the DNS (see the
next step)
- questions whether your Web site: a) uses any Front Page server
extensions, b) runs any Web statistics, c) uses any interactive Forms,
or d) uses any CGI.
- requests the you briefly review your Web pages on the new server to ensure they are OK.
- You, or your current Web hosting provider, will need to change the authoritative Name Servers for yourclinic.com to point
to IHR's Name Servers:
NS1.SECURE.NET
and
NS2.SECURE.NET
IHR can help you with this.
- Then we wait a few days for the DNS changes to propagate throughout the
Internet. During this transition period:
- you will have old and new Web sites operating in parallel.
- it's best if no important updates are made to your old or new
site, otherwise we'll have to update both the old and new sites, for each
change.
- IHR then tests the Web statistics report and provides you with access
information.
- If you request, IHR will set up FTP access for you, to allow you to update
and upload your own Web pages. IHR will then provide you with a UserName and
password. For FTP information, refer to Uploading
Files to the Web Server (on InfertilityWebsites.com).
- Technical issue: There are two ways to change the DNS for
your Domain Name:
- Change the authoritative Name Server to IHR's Name Servers (e.g., NS1.SECURE.NET).
This is the ideal way to make the DNS change as it provides IHR with the
most control.
- Keep the Name Server as is, but point your Domain Name "A record"
(used for Web pages) to IHR's Web
server. This works OK, however is not ideal since it does not give us the
most control over your Domain Name.
- It's ideal if IHR has access to control your DNS (Domain Name Services),
otherwise whomever controls your DNS may not feel inclined to assist.
- The process is simplest if you are not currently using email with your
Domain Name. If you are, then IHR will work with you to carefully ensure a smooth
transition for your email.
- It is possible, and not uncommon, to have one server host the email and a
different server host the Web site. This is done as follows:
- "A record" which is used for Web page requests, is pointed
to one server
- "MX
record" which is used for for email requests, is pointed to a different server
