Fertility Acupuncture

Acupuncture is increasingly popular for the treatment of infertility and other women’s health issues. TCM treats the whole person, not just whatever symptoms are manifest. Acupuncture helps regulate the endocrine system, thus affecting hormone levels, ovulation, and menstrual cycles. It has also been shown to increase male fertility, resulting in increased sperm count and motility.

The scientific community has shown increased interest in the ability of acupuncture to treat infertility. The benefits include:

• sympathetic nervous system normalization - resulting in increased blood flow to the uterus and increased uterine wall thickness, which enhances implantation
• reduction of stress hormones - acupuncture releases beta-endorphins and has a calming effect on the nervous system
• improved blood levels of reproductive hormones
• normalization of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarain axis - a key process to fertility

Acupuncture has been shown to increase the effectiveness of IVF  in a well-known German study. Whether you have tried Western medical interventions or not, acupuncture and herbs can be an effective complementary or stand-alone treatment for infertility.

Allison Crawford, MS, LAc, is a graduate of UCLA and the Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine College, Berkeley. Allison is familiar with the current techniques and medications used in the Western treatment of infertility, and can communicate effectively with your other healthcare practitioners to achieve the best possible outcome. She apprenticed with an acupuncturist in the East Bay with expertise in treating infertility and women’s health, and has completed post-graduate training with Dr. Randine Lewis, author of The Infertility Cure. Alllison has helped many couples overcome their fertility challenges.
